A Baby No More

I attended Elijah’s Parent Consultation Evening the other day. I was very happy with the teacher’s feedback, except that he is not in the top set in Math (knowing how much I hated the subject, I can totally identify with my boy). Well, no one’s perfect so it is not an issue to me at all. Although, we are still supporting and encouraging him to improve in this subject, which he is very willing to do as well.

According to his teacher, Elijah’s level in spelling is that of a 10 year old & eight months. He is turning eight on Monday, just three days away. He is also very good in Arts. The teacher pointed out a lovely drawing of a recorder, complete with neat and correct labelling of its parts. It is Elijah’s work. The teacher said that she just had to put it up on the wall because it was so beautifully done. My heart swelled with pride at that moment and I couldn’t help but take a photo of it:

Looking back to that time when he started going to school here in England, he was a painfully shy little boy. He is still shy until now, which is one of the comments of his current teacher. He does not put up his hand to answer questions. But when he is called to answer, he always knows the answer. He is just shy to show that he knows. But he has always been like that – laid back and very manageable as a little boy.

This was him when he was in Year 1:

I was not quite pleased with the way he smiled. I even forgot that it was their picture taking day, so he did not have the official green jumper on. But we ordered some copies of this photo for remembrance. He still looked like my little baby, but not quite anymore.

In Year 2, Elijah really blossomed academically. It was then that we saw how good he can be in spelling and writing. His work was always neat. But his school photo that year was horrible. I did not like the way he looked at all. He was not prepared well by the photographer so we did not order any copies. I am showing the proof here to show how he is growing through the years:

This time, he was prepared for the pictorial. I even wanted him to bring a comb with him to comb his hair but he would not hear any of it. But his posing was not right. Though, I think that this photo is candid and really captured a genuine smile of my boy.

In Year 3 now, I can see how much he has grown and matured. He has learned to pose and smile at the camera. In this photo, he is a baby no more:

I can see the changes in his behaviour, appearance and speech every single day and somehow, my heart is slowly but surely letting go, allowing him more freedom and room to grow into his own person. It’s hard but I am trying.

Elijah, happy 8th birthday! I thank the Lord for you, my baby (no more).

Time’s so fast! My kid too, is baby no more. They’re becoming independent, and they have their own likes and needs too.

Parang Harry Potter ang dating na ni Elijah, if he’s wearing glasses (but I hope he won’t have to wear one just to correct his vision).

Yeah right. He is growing now. Just allow him to grow up on his own. And let him always know that you, his parents are still there to support him no matter what. ;D
