Confession
by mathe | Monday, September 21st, 2009 at 2:20 pm | Life as I See it |School is in full swing again and so homework and school stuff are the order of the day for most of the week. When one has school-age kids, it is like going back to school again and being re-acquainted with the lessons in school. I welcome this sometimes because it makes me feel as if I indeed learned a lot when I was a grade-school pupil, because lessons and concepts would just freely come back to me and I can easily impress my kids all over again (lol!).
But I have a confession to make. I HATED MATH AND I THINK I STILL DO. Please keep it a secret as I am so afraid to let anybody else know.
I am very thankful that I married a man who is quite comfortable with Algebra (up til now, I haven’t figured out yet why they need to add letters when there are enough numbers to play with anyway) or Math in general. I take care of reading, writing, spelling or packaging homework but when there are Math lessons that need to be explained further to the kids, I sit prettily while my hubby does the teacher act.

Fraction is such a baffling concept for a little boy who only knows half and one whole. So, one afternoon, he told us that he does not understand his teacher’s explanation about fractions. I looked to the hubby and he started to explain. First, he drew figures of half pie and 1/4 pie and 1/3 pie and yet, our visual learner could still not get it.
So, the hubby went from a two-dimensional to a three-dimensional visual aid. I am not sure anymore if it was meant to be eaten that day but the melon ended up being that visual aid.
In fairness, my little boy was the most attentive student. Can you see that scowl on his face, as he tries to grapple with such a difficult subject?

I envied him that time, actually, because he had a parent who made time to explain fractions to him. I cannot imagine my own father doing that for me. My mother is a teacher but she did not have time for things like fractions when I was a little girl.
Am I glad that I found this man who prefers to stay at home when he is not working and being the father that his kids need. As for me, please let me just cook and clean the house. No Math lessons please.

Good that your kid have a father like him ho pay attention to his kids lessons. =D

Hi! April. Fathers are God’s gifts indeed!
Thanks for dropping by!
Your kid is so lucky. I was also lucky when I was a kid because my mom and dad used to teach me do my homework. But the thing was they are not good in Math as well. So if it was a Math assignment I had to do everything all by myself.
I am so excited that Ivana will start school in January next year. I can’t wait to teach her homework especially reading, writing and art, hihi…. I feel like I, myself, is going back to kindergarten!
Toni! Thanks for dropping by. Yes, I can say my two sons are lucky because their father has a teacher’s heart.
I’m sure you will make a very good kindergarten Mom! All the best!
Now there’s a reason why your husband should be doing his duties as a father to your son – that is to help with your son’s school work.
Okay, I’m off to tell everyone that you hate math! :-p
