Learning + Fun = One Enjoyable Summer!
by mathe | Friday, August 7th, 2009 at 3:00 pm | Momspeak |Summer is in full swing. Well, except for the occasional summer shower/downpours, that is.
Anyway, it is that time of the year again to look for creative ways to spend time with our children. This year, I have decided that we will have educational day trips during the Saturdays that I am not working.
Elijah has been pestering us since months before for a visit to the British Natural History Museum, which we were not able to fully explore the first time we went there two summers ago. He cannot forget the dinosaur fossils that he saw there. We will go back and see those perhaps and go to the other wings/areas that we have not seen the first time.
The museum is open all days of the year except on Christmas Day I think and it is for free so it is something that we should not miss because it is an excellent way to educate the children. We are going by train which the boys will love, for sure. On my part, I can’t wait to see London again. The last time we were there, I saw it from a different perspective and have decided to enjoy it as often and as fully as I can. You might want to read that post to give you an idea of my excitement at the moment.
Then, the second Saturday after that, we are planning to go to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew somewhere in south-western London. It features a 200-meter elevated walkway where one can walk literally on the treetops! I wonder how Elijah and I will do there. We both have a fear of heights, as you will read in the post I gave the link to above.
There are other wonderful attractions like the palm house, water lily house and the seed bank, where hundreds of varieties of plant seeds are stored. That seed bank must be very valuable in the future, when more plant species will go extinct due to factors like climate change, pollution, destruction of nature due to natural and man-made disasters, etc. Oh!, I’m having apocalyptic visions here. I hope the gardens will have a better effect on me when we get there.
There is also the Kew Palace, the smallest of the royal palaces in Britain. It has a separate entrance fee but if it is interesting enough for us to explore, we might get in and pay additional. Entrance to the gardens is free for children under 12 years old, anyway. So, if we find the Kew Palace worth seeing, it is not too much to pay a little for the privilege of getting in.
On the 28th of the month, we are booked to see the Walking with Dinosaurs show in Wembley Stadium, London. We were supposed to go there on the 26th, so I applied for an annual leave for that day. So, hubby went online to book our tickets and he chose the middle price (£35.00) for the 26th of August. Then, we wanted to look for a better seating in the stadium so we did not confirm the booking yet. We were being offered corner seats and we wanted somewhere in the middle. When we went back to the choices and finally decided to take whatever seat is available, all tickets for that price range on that day for that venue have been sold already – in only a matter of minutes!
Unfortunately, we had to settle for the lowest-priced tickets which will be very far from the arena. Sometimes, when we are too choosy, we end up with what we wanted to avoid in the first place. Oh, well.
So, this August, while we are not able to go on a long holiday, our boys will have some opportunities to learn while having fun.
What about you, moms out there? What activities do you have lined up for your little ones?
