Then and Now

Sometimes, it’s important for us to look back to the old days to get a better perspective of the present. Sometimes, our “today” is so in our faces that we miss to see its beauty altogether. With the benefit of looking back, we can achieve a better view of now and the future and this makes life so much more interesting.

This is us some four years ago when we were still living in a rented accommodation in a low-cost subdivision somewhere in the city of Caloocan, Metro Manila, Philippines.
I was still working as Executive Assistant to the Chief of Party of a USAID-funded family planning project then. My husband was with a hospital in Manila as a Radiographer. He was earning hospital experience for possible posting abroad.
Back then, life was simple for us. A time when my little boy was still the fat, rotund baby that he was. That time, our little big boy was still that – a boy, not the man he is becoming now, hairy all over with a voice that booms loud when he wants to antagonize or intimidate me.
In this photo, we didn’t have a clue yet that we would be living here in England at this time of our life. It was also in March when this photo was taken by my sister, right after we arrived from Jonathan’s school where he got some awards – a medal and certificates.
We were happy, as we are now. We were content, as we are now. We had dreams then. With those dreams were hope and faith in God.
This is us in June last year – still happy, still content, with some of our past dreams already realized. Still hopeful, still living by faith.
The kids are not as little anymore but like before, they are still healthy and they are still with us and we are all still together – a gift in itself we so easily forget.
Our family photo last Christmas shows the kids have yet grown bigger. We are still together and happy and content. Life is still simple for all of us. We are trying to live one day at a time, one tiny step at a time towards our dreams. Through our family journey,we stay together and learn together and grow together. We look back to where we come from and as a family, we are thankful for what we have and for where we are headed.
Then and now, family and our faith are constant. Then and now, we are thankful for whatever we are given.
