My Young Man

by mathe | Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 at 4:17 am | Life as I See it |

For this week and the next, my hubby and I are on leave. It is rather late since summer has already packed its bags and gone off somewhere else, leaving England at the mercies of harsher weather. It’s just that this is the only time we can avail of our paid leave/holiday since our respective colleagues were faster in filing for their summer holidays.

No regrets, though, as we made the most of every opportunity to enjoy the season with the kids and our wonderful friends. In fact, we just came from a day-long adventure in Chessington. But I am going ahead of myself as that will be for another post.

Anyway, we went shopping yesterday for the few remaining items our boys need before school starts later this week. I was not feeling well (until today, actually) but we had to go because we are car-less today as the car is due for check up before autumn and winter set in. But that is not my main point here.

So, we went shopping and we bought some school supplies, a pair of shoes and undergarments for our older boy (The younger one has almost everything he needs). We are concerned about him as he is already getting into more serious stuff in school. We continually show our support to him by reassuring him that he can do it (we honestly believe that intellectually, he can manage) and giving him everything that he needs. I am excited for him and I believe he is up to the challenge. I made him read books this whole summer to give him stock knowledge in science and asked him to write short compositions just to build up his confidence in writing.

My little boy is almost a man now. He was really a tiny boy even for Filipino standards. But just when his growth gap years set in, he defied established growth patterns among young boys and grew exponentially. He is as tall as myself now – five feet at 11 years old.

He is a sweet boy when he is in the mood (and that is quite seldom). He is the moody type, temperamental and keeps to himself when in the house, though the life of the party when with his friends. He has an incredible imagination and can easily grasp and understand things – concepts even.

He is not bookish and not very serious with his studies. In other words, he is more playful. But he is not behind at all. If pushed to perform, he really delivers.

These photos are perhaps the last ones of us together with him sitting on my lap. He does not do that anymore as he is heavier than me now.

In a few days, he will soon walk to school on his own, gain new friends with whom he will be for the next four years or so, and discover things about life on his own. He will soon be studying about information and technology, literature and history – stuff that I can soon discourse on with him with pleasure as I would with an adult.

I now have a young man with interests that are similar to mine – languages, discourses, literature and food! Yes, I cook and he eats it all – that’s how things work with our common love for food.

So, yes, though I refuse to admit that I am on my way to becoming an old woman, I can’t deny that I now have a young man in my life and queerly, I am quite excited.
